Scientific inspiration, and maybe a job, at Goddard Space Flight Center

Scouts find scientific inspiration, and maybe future jobs, at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center

NASA optical physicist Ray Ohl seemed pleasantly surprised.

His opening question to the Report to the Nation delegates had been this: “Are any of you interested in a science or engineering or technical career?”

Immediately, 10 hands shot into the air.

“All right! That’s great to hear,” Ohl said. “Lots of careers in science will be hiring. In fact, there are NASA internships at every NASA facility.”

Facilities like Goddard Space Flight Center in Maryland, where NASA built the Hubble Space Telescope and its successor, the James Webb Space Telescope.

It is the 26th year that Goddard has hosted the Report to the Nation delegates. Each year, NASA scientists like Ohl give up a Saturday to drive into their place of work and host a group of Scouts and Venturers.

Each year, the Goddard visit demonstrates that the kind of hands-on STEM experiences young people get in Scouting could translate into exciting jobs at places like NASA.

And with the BSA’s new STEM Scouts program, that opportunity is available to more young people than ever before.

A passion for science

You could tell that Ohl, who serves as a den leader in his son’s Cub Scout pack, enjoys his job.

He talks about black holes the way a football fan might describe a game-winning catch. The enthusiasm level is high, and hand motions and sound effects are in full use.

Ohl’s black hole talk began with four or five delegates. As the conversation went on, even more were drawn into his orbit.

One of the Scouts who seemed especially interested was Daniel Yu, an Eagle Scout from Illinois who designed and built with his troop a project that was sent to the International Space Station.

As they walked past the giant vacuum chamber where NASA tests some of its space technology, Daniel asked Ohl to verify something he’d heard in his studies.

“In a vacuum, there’s no air resistance,” Daniel said. “You get rid of all forces except gravity. Is that why a bowling ball and a feather will fall at the same rate in a vacuum?”

“That’s right,” Ohl said. “Very good.”

(Skeptical, I had to see this for myself. Apparently it’s true.)

Discovering the future

At Goddard, the NASA team is working on a number of projects that could lead to a deeper understanding of our universe and the development of what Ohl called “Star Trek-like technology.”

Goddard’s primary hub for that research is a giant clean room where work can be completed in a sterile environment.

“This is the biggest clean room in the world,” Ohl said. Then a beat later, he added, “Actually, the Russians have one that’s bigger, but it’s not as clean.”

The delegates stood on the viewing platform, peering through glass at the massive white cube — a blank canvas for scientific breakthroughs.

Looked at another way, these young people might have been peering into their futures as NASA scientists.

As they departed Goddard, the delegates thanked Ohl for his time.

He told them to apply for a NASA internship, because he could see their boundless potential.

That’s the power of Scouting.

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center: Disability Employment Done Right

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center: Disability Employment Done Right

The NASA Goddard Space Flight Center sets the bar for cutting edge technology and space exploration, but they also are setting the bar right here on Earth for disability hiring and inclusion. I recently had the unique opportunity to visit one of the most interesting agencies in the Federal Government and wanted to share with you some of the innovative things happening there.

The Goddard Space Flight Center has developed an inclusive culture from recruitment, to hiring, through training, and ultimately the retention of people with disabilities. In 2009, the Office of Personnel Management held the first ever Federal Government disability job fair; human resource managers from Goddard attended and actually hired candidates they met using Schedule A hiring authority, which expedites the hiring process for persons with disabilities. The agency also actively recruits folks with disabilities at great science and technology schools. They have a close working relationship with vocational rehabilitation centers, the Workforce Recruitment Program, and the American Association for the Advancement of Science’s internship program for interns with disabilities who feed them highly qualified candidates in Science, Technology, Engineering , and Math (STEM). Thanks to these great practices, the Goddard center has reached its internal agency goals both for disability and veteran hiring.

Kareem Dale, Special Assistant to the President for Disability Policy (center) tours the satellite testing facility at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. August 3, 2011. (by NASA Goddard Space Flight Center)

But, for this agency, hiring individuals with disabilities is not viewed as a box to be checked. Goddard ensures that training for new hires is accessible, through a robust feedback mechanism which helps to reduce unintentional barriers. Goddard also offers development and learning sessions for current staff and managers, including the Diversity Dialogue Project which provides a space for conversation where employees can discuss barriers and combat insensitivity. They also run a very popular “Power and Privilege” series where employees can learn about disability history and discuss disability related issues.

One of the most significant barriers to successful employment for people with disabilities is the lack of reasonable accommodations. The Goddard Space Flight Center uses one of the best practices for ensuring that accommodations are provided to level the playing field for all employees—the agency maintains a centralized accommodation fund, meaning individual managers do not feel pressure to make reasonable accommodations decisions based on their department budgets.

Diversity in Goddard’s hiring matches the diversity of the skillsets required to be on the cutting edge of earth and space sciences. We took a great tour of the facility which is currently building and testing parts of the James Webb SpaceTelescope (JWST), a new powerful telescope the size of a tennis court which will be in orbit nearly one million miles from Earth (in comparison, the Hubble telescope was about 350 miles from Earth’s surface). JWST is Hubble’s successor and will enable scientists to help us understand more about the Big Bang.

The diverse employees of the Goddard Space Flight Center are responsible for inception, building, testing, and launching the coolest high-tech stuff around. From a blind equal employment opportunity specialist who welcomed us, to a thermal engineer with a physical disability who showed us a huge machine that simulates the space vacuum and extreme temperatures, to Deaf engineers who showed us mockups and test equipment they designed for the satellite’s data and command center (its brain), this just once again proves that people with disabilities can work anywhere and do anything.

NASA Goddard Space Flight Center Reviews

Your trust is our top concern, so companies can’t alter or remove reviews.

” There was a nice work environment and a lot of collaboration ” (in 21 reviews)

” The mentors care about your work; the work-life balance seems to be good ” (in 15 reviews)

” Arrogant older employees who treat workers with ” (in 9 reviews)

” Many workers don’t work very hard once becoming a civil servant ” (in 7 reviews)

“Fun work environment but low pay as a contractor”

I have been working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time for more than a year

– Fun work environment – Meaningful projects

– “flex time” is most times thrown away by the end of pay period – Contractors treated as if they were lower class

“Jobs Program”

I worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time for more than 5 years

-Job security -Friendly work environment -no dress code or standards -some projects allow innovation and are great to work on -some good people fight the bureaucracy and actually get stuff done -Best place to work if you’re lazy and and want to collect a dependable paycheck

“Not a good place to work”

I have been working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time

None, there is not a good place to work

Everyone is a manager there

“Great place to work”

I have been working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time for more than 10 years

Unique high technology work, work flexibility, great benefits.

Government bureaucracy is sometimes hard to navigate through..

“Great place”

I worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time

Benefits stability benefits stability benifits

“Nightmare!”

I worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time for more than 10 years

I loved my job and did it well

If you have a supervisor who doesn’t like you, NASA Goddard will enable it. They feel that they have no right to stop criminal behavior as long as it does not involve a government employee, I suffered 17 years of flagrant abuse and Goddard knew about it the whole time and did nothing to stop it.

“It All Depends”

I have been working at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time for more than 5 years

flexibility, great work life balance, relaxed work environment

hard to move around to different projects, eventually will feel stuck somewhere you do not want to be, you have to seek out promotions yourself even though you are entitled to one after a year but management will not tell you, hard for black employees to gain credit they deserve

“Full cost accounting + large retirement age staff = nope”

I worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center full-time for more than a year

The pay is okay for the area given that it’s a GS job.

> 60% of the civil servant employee base are retirement eligible. Full cost accounting means that the early career scientists have to hustle writing grant proposals for their paychecks while the scientist who have been around for awhile just get charge codes for nebulous “work”.

“Fun program!”

I worked at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center for less than a year

-There were plenty of opportunities for enrichment outside of your internship (talks, tours, everyone was really excited to talk to interns for informational interviews). -Tons of other interns -Pretty unbeatable on a resumé.

-My internship supervisor was way too busy for me and I had trouble getting a hold of him. -I was bored extremely often because my supervisor was so MIA. I don’t think that many other interns had this issue however.
